It is a physiological fact that the chemical and biochemical components of these fluids are kept within a narrow range of variation or “normal range”. Measuring these values discovers departures from the normal and leads to the diagnosis of organ diseases such as the liver, the lungs or kidneys
Another area that has been developing fast is the field of endocrinology. The measurement of hormones by highly sensitive tests discovers diseases of endocrine glands.

The patients with such diseases need to be diagnosed by specific laboratory tests.
Diseases such as allergies and autoimmune conditions require immunological knowledge that makes sense of the tests used in clinical laboratories. This is a fast growing area of the laboratory sciences including research of immunological diseases, cancer and the development of immunisation materials and protocols.
This department also teaches the basics of molecular biology.
